On Mnemosyne's memorable day known as Sun, 27 Jun 2004 01:39:21 -0400       Calliope probably had an epic bad hair day to prompt her sister Thalia in       mockingly inspiring c_bennett__@webtv.net (C B) to write in his/her epistle       <19669-40DE5D89-194@storefull-3215.bay.webtv.net> thus:              > Is there a setting to turn off the numbers being dialed on boot-up? I       > can turn off all other sounds but this one. Thanks for any help.              Might this be 'cause Windows 95 is attempting to dial-in to a network-server       while at the same time logging you on at Windows 95 ? In other words: it is       trying to establish a network connection through your modem? If this is the       apparent and perhaps unwanted case, you might want to disengage this       automatic log-on feature that usually comes into play with a Client for       Microsoft Networks' double Windows/Network log-on setting enabled. Here is       how Windows 95 Resource Kit under 'Configuring Logon and Reconnection       Options' advises the remedy:              "To enable [or disable] logon validation for Client for Microsoft Networks              1. In the Network option in Control Panel, double-click Client for       Microsoft Networks in the list of network components.              2. In General properties, check the Log On To Windows NT Domain option       if you want to log on to a Windows NT or LAN Manager domain automatically       when starting Windows 95.              If you do not want to log on to a domain when starting Windows 95, make sure       this option is cleared."              In your 'unwanted' case, you would want to follow this last suggestion, for       if this was actually set, disabling it should kill off any of your stated       "numbers being dial[l]ed" at boot-up. If, on the other hand, the       (network/domain/server) dial-in is initiated through a DOS- or       NetWare-script, you should check out any boot-scripts and your CONFIG.SYS       and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for such boot-babies (or run a Anti-virus scan just       to make sure you are not made into a server for someone else's fun!).              If you actually want the dial-in at Windows log-on but do not want the modem       sounds, I can answer your original question with a simple yes. These       dialling sounds - made by your modem, that is - can be silenced.       Goto Start | Settings | Configuration | Modems and click 'Properties' when       your active modem is highlighted. Now push volume slide to the extreme left       (off) position. Repeat for all active modems.              User...              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
