   Once bitten, twice shy?
Next time, try "Emergency Recovery Utility" ERU.EXE. It installs a utility
[ERD.EXE] that automates the backup of important system files in the C:\ERD
folder, along with ERD.EXE, a DOS utility which you can use to restore them.
Look for ERU.EXE in the \OTHER\MISC\ERU folder on your Win95 CD-ROM.

Install and regularly run ERU.EXE, the backup process is pretty simple and
straight forward. You can add extra files, if you like, by manually editing
the ERD.INF (located in the install-directory you choose) that the ERU.EXE
program creates after you run it the first time . Default is the folder
C:\ERD. The information file ERD.INF probably looks something like this in a
text editor (if your Windows 95 is installed in C:\WINDOWS\):

   [WINDOWS]
   C:\WINDOWS\

   [CREATION]
   01/01/04,12:48:27

   [FILES]
   CONFIG.S_S,CONFIG.SYS,C:\
   AUTOEXEC.B_T,AUTOEXEC.BAT,C:\
   WIN.I_I,WIN.INI,C:\WINDOWS\
   SYSTEM.I_I,SYSTEM.INI,C:\WINDOWS\
   PROTOCOL.I_I,PROTOCOL.INI,C:\WINDOWS\
   USER.D_T,USER.DAT,C:\WINDOWS\
   SYSTEM.D_T,SYSTEM.DAT,C:\WINDOWS\
   IO.S_S,IO.SYS,C:\
   COMMAND.C_M,COMMAND.COM,C:\
   MSDOS.S_S,MSDOS.SYS,C:\

The back-up format is pretty self-explanatory, I would say.
If not, MYCAT.JPG in your D:\DEAD\PETS\ folder should be written as:

   MYCAT.J_G,MYCAT.JPG,D:\DEAD\PETS\

   Got it?
Be careful though: running ERU.EXE on a Windows 95 system that doesn't have
any of the files listed (or incorrectly spelled) in this ERD.INF (located in
the folder where you first installed ERU) can lockup your machine!
(Which...er...was your original problem to begin with, if I remember
   correctly)
BTW: ERD.EXE can only be run in real MS-DOS mode, it will not work under the
Windows 95 shell for the most obvious reason, id est system file(s)
corruption prevents Windows 95 shell to start up properly.

And if you do NOT use Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files, create "fake"
(empty) Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files with a text editor in the root
folder of your boot drive (C:\ is default), or copy two small plain text
(ASCII) files as Autoexec.bat and as Config.sys respectively, from any
folder to C:\ -- even if your system doesn't need/use them.

Lastly, there is something called BACKUP.EXE & it should be down in your
folder C:\WINDOWS\ACCESSORIES\. You could give this tool a try as well. If
absent, add/install it through Windows Setup-Tab in START | SETTINGS
   |CONFIGURATION| SOFTWARE and check the Backup feature under the 'System
   Tools' component.
