     Thanks for all the advice, took a combination of things to make it work.   
   Had to boot and format with MaxblastPro1.2* in the laptop, sys it with DOS6.21,   
   install DOS in the desktop through the 2.5"->3.5" converter, boot a live Linux   
   CD in the desktop, copy down the CAB files, reboot in the laptop, run setup   
   and let it scandisk & "fix" the hdd then fail (due to low ram), drop back into   
   the desktop and run setup, then when it failed there, dropped it back into the   
   laptop a final time... . It appeared the "big trick" was repartitioning   
   the drive to use slightly less than the 2167M available.
