On Mnemosyne's memorable day known as Mon, 26 Jul 2004 06:28:54 GMT Calliope
probably had an epic bad hair day to prompt her sister Thalia in mockingly
inspiring Danno to write in his/her epistle
    thus:

   > For the sake of archiving, the Cirrus Logic 4529/30/34 driver worked, but
   only
   > in 16 color mode, no amount of manipulation could bring on 256 colors.

It ought to work, methinks. Did you try to disable the hardware
acceleration? Or perhaps an updated Cirrus Logic driver is still available?

But before you run off, check first if your current driver is truly Win95
   'compatible' at all.
This is how the Windows 95 Resource Kit glosses over compatibility [Devices
   | Troubleshooting Device Configuration | Correcting Problems with Display]:

   "To check the display drivers

   1. In Device Manager, click the plus sign next to Display Adapters.
   2. Double-click the specific display adapter shown (for example, Cirrus
   Logic).
   3. In the properties dialog box, click the Driver tab.
   4. Click each file shown in the Driver Files box. The File Version appears
in the File Details box, if available (some vendor’s display drivers might
   not contain version information).
   5. Check displayed file versions for compatibility. Windows 95 display
driver files have version numbers starting at 4.00 or higher."

However, I would recommend installing a 'standard' Video Graphics Array
(VGA) driver, NOT your troubling OEM or Cirrus Logic 4529/30/34 driver. And
preferably one that supports 256 or more colours (SVGA).

In the Display option in Control Panel, click the Settings tab. Click the
'Change Display Type' button, and then click the 'Change' button for the
Adapter Type. Choose the DIY route for listing & searching the drivers
yourself in stead of Windows 95's slowboat hardware recognition. Click on or
radio button-select 'All Hardware Drivers' or something like that and then
select the (generic) standard/super VGA driver (should be top of the list of
   manufacturers).
Install, reboot and hope for a miracle.
