If you think your suspicion to be correct, why not apply the same method -
that obviously worked on your laptop - on your desktop computer?
Ergo: make sure that your monitor type (monitor type setting) is set to
something like 'Standard Monitor' and the model to 'Super VGA 1024x768'. See
Change Display Type on the Settings tab of the Display option in Control
Panel. You can safely select any other driver in the Show Compatible Devices
list in the Select Driver dialog box. Of course, you can also select the
'Show All Devices' option only if you know that you need to select a
specific driver from the Models list that also supports your monitor type
and model. Beware: you must be careful to select a driver that you know to
be compatible with your display adapter.

Additionally, you can try to temporarily disable the 'Hardware acceleration'
option. Windows 95 Resource Kit says about this [Performance Tuning |
   Setting Graphics Compatibility Options]:

"In Windows 95, graphics hardware acceleration features can be turned off
when system performance indicates incompatibility problems. Specifically,
problems can occur when Windows 95 assumes a display adapter can support
certain functionality that it cannot. In such cases, the side effects might
be anything from small irregularities on the screen to system failure. You
can disable hardware acceleration features of the display adapter so that
the computer can still be used if there is a problem with the display
adapter. If changing these settings fixes otherwise unexplained system
crashes or performance problems, then the source of the problem is probably
   the computer’s display adapter.

    To change graphics performance settings

   1.	In the System option in Control Panel, click the Performance tab,
and then click the Graphics button.
   2.	Drag the slider to change the hardware acceleration setting, as
summarized in the following list. Then click OK."

However, if your display device (video card) is a Plug and Play-compliant
device, it is much easier to let Windows recognize and install correctly
your hardware display (driver) at boot-up for you. To do so, delete the
current Display adapter(s) first from Device Manager (in the System option
   in Control Panel) and reboot.
