   OK, I'm responding to my own post...   
      
   I did some searching, and found that I wasn't the only one to have   
   this problem. A remedy that I found said to power down the computer,   
   unplug it, and wait 30 minutes before booting back up. Guess what?   
   Everything is working now! Several people did this on XP systems, and   
   it seemed to work. Strange...
