   The size difference is huge enough to make a simple clone copy unbootable   
   due to sector size changes necessary. Or you don't use the full size yet,   
   and let windows later on create another partition(s).   
   Reactivating XP should not be necessary if just the harddrive is changed,   
   but even then it should go without a hitch (when the xp copy is legit).

   Ah, external drive. Well, dd'ing from a livecd boot and possibly gzipping   
   may work. But why not use gparted or similar programs from a livecd?
