new computer and sound problem

   I have a new HP Pavilion Media m8200n PC. I connected an old pair of   
   speakers to the green jack on the back and then tried different jacks,   
   but still don't get any sound out of the pc. Any ideas?, it's running   
   vista Home Premium.
