Never mind - I figured out how.

For others who may be similarly inclined to make this change, here is the
step by step procedure (from start to finish) that worked for me. Note:
I've tested it on only one file so far, but I don't anticipate any
   problems.

   1) Click on My Computer to open Windows Explorer.
   2) Click on Tools | Folder Options...
   3) Click on the File Types tab
   4) Press "R" to get close to the entry for RAR, then scroll down to it.
   5) Click on the RAR entry.

At this point, the "Advanced" button should be available (not grayed out)

   6) Click on the "Advanced" button
   7) A dialog box will open, click on the "New" button
   8) This opens another dialog box:
    a) Under "Action:", type:
    Extract Here

    b) Under "Application used to perform action:", type:
    "C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe" "x""%1"

Note: Type it EXACTLY as I have it above - including all quotes. The only
modification you may need to make is if your winrar has not been installed
to C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe. This is the default location though.

    c) Put a checkmark in the "Use DDE" box
    d) Under "Application:", type:
    WinRAR
    e) Under "Topic:", type:
    System

   9) Click OK to close all boxes. You're done.

   Enjoy!

Steps 8c, 8d and 8e might not be necessary - but I did them and so far it's
   working on my system.

I don't know whether or not steps 8d and 8e are case sensitive. That is,
typing WiNrAr for step 8d and sySTEm for 8e might work but I won't swear to
it. I suspect it doesn't matter, but I thought I'd mention it.
