   I do not understand "master", "slave", "IDE chain" in my ignorant state.   
      
   If my hard drive crashes, I want to be able to restore my system from   
   an external drive and not have to re-install software and then have to   
   search around for the updates that have occurred since the original   
   installation.   
      
   A neighbor has a newer MAC with an external drive and software called   
   "Carbon Copy Cloner" and he presumably can restore his system from the   
   last complete backup if the native drive crashes. He can actually boot   
   up from the external drive. Please point me to something similar for   
   Win XP.
