   Sorry if you've seen this post elsewhere.  I'm desperate for an answer or at   
   least some ideas on where else I can go to fix this problem this afternoon.   
      
   Hello, Maybe someone can help with this.   
      
   Using Windowx XP Pro Service Pack 3.  The computer began bluescreening with   
   ATAPI.SYS error STOP: 0X0000008E at address F74a471D.  I CANNOT get into any   
   mode (safe, save with prompt, normal, last successful, etc) because it keeps   
   crashing before Windows finishes loading.   
      
   I did a repair from an installation disk -- that is, I did the "second R"   
   the one where you press F8 to accept the agreement and then press R to keep   
   the user's files.  The install disk has Service Pack 1 on it.  That was   
   fine -- NO ERROR.   
      
   I then ran the Service Pack 3 update, and the exact same thing came back:   
   Stopped on ATAPI.SYS error.   
      
   I went into Recover mode and did a CHKDSK c: /R (or P, I forget, but it's   
   the one that does everything), and ran the entire 2-hour chkdsk, rebooted,   
   and I still get the ADAPI.SYS error.   
      
   The HD is larger than 137 GB, which I understand was an ADAPI issue, but I   
   also understand that both SP1 and SP3 tweak the system to allow a larger HD.   
   I can read the HD just fine using BART-PE, so I don't think that's the   
   problem, either.   
      
   Also, I copied a fresh ATAPI.SYS from the i386 folder to the   
   windows\system32\drivers folder and verified that it was there.   
      
   I still cannot boot into ANYTHING, not safe mode, nothing.   
      
   Help!!!
