Converting USB to serial with a simple adaptor works in the virtual mode. It
is not a true serial port with the full attributes. You will have to get a
true serial card for your computer. If it is a laptop, you can get a PCMCIA
serial card for it. These are not very expensive from what I remember.

If your device only needs only a simple RX/TX communications, does not
require DSR, DTS and etc., and it is not sensitive to timing issues, then
the simple USB to serial adaptor should work most of the time.

I have a laptop that does not have a serial port and have two
hardware/applications that use serial to USB cables. Recently the two
applications stopped seeing the data coming across the cables. I have
uninstalled the programs and re-installed them but no success on the data
coming through. I have also tried using the serial to USB cables through a
4 port USB hub but no success. Any ideas how to get the data flowing?
