I have a Gateway 1100 Athlon based pc, about 6 years old. The pc has 2
hdd's, one running my main OS XP home, the other running win2k. I am
sending this from the latter OS. This morning, I went to start the main
OS (XP) & got the following error:

"STOP: C000218 {registry file failure}. The registry cannot load the
hive (file) \systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or
alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

   Beginning dump of physical memory.
   Physical memory dump complete

Contact system administrator or support group for further assistance"

On rebooting, I tried opening in the available options, "last good
configuration" + "safe mode", but I get the same error.

The file system32\config\software exists on the OS. It is about 22 meg
in size. It is marked hidden, but not read only.

What can I do to get the XP OS to operate? I have found this knowledge
base article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822705 which seems on
target but I thought I'd get input from the experts here before
proceeding. Although I can get online, all my daily use
configurations/email client/etc. are on the main OS & rebuilding
everything will be a huge pain!

   Thanks,

   Sheila
