   I solved the problem by downloading a copy of Win XP SP2 from a torrent and   
   using that to update. It worked.   
      
   I know what you mean Weatherlawyer, about the first version of XP running   
   very fast. A shame they could not keep that up. SP2 noticably cripples a   
   slower system.
