Novice needs networking help

   I have three computers in the house... a Dell XPS-400 desktop, an older HP   
   laptop (ZT 1175, I think), and a 2 year old Dell Inspiron laptop.  I want to   
   make the XPS my "server" and have all the others link to it.   I am   
   considering wireless... What do I need?  What is the best bang for the buck?
