   I am confused now:If you connected (to the Public), you should have an IP.   
   Or do you mean, the your kit refused to connect because it was configured to   
   reject 'Un-secure' connections?   
   The result you got would be what I expected.   
   The connetion to the Public was made after the failed connection to my own   
   SSID.
