   I might even skip the safe-mode boot and boot from a Live Linux CD in   
   order to copy any critical data to some other media.  Once that's done,   
   then run some hard-drive diagnostics.  If you get a crash running Linux,   
   you probably have a hardware problem: Cooling fan, power supply, memory   
   stick or motherboard.  If the thing freezes copying from the hard drive,   
   also check the drive cables and connections.
