   1962? The IBM PC dates from the 1980's and had MFM (2 cable drives).   
   I don't have a date when I got my first 104M (Connor) IDE drive (thinking Late   
   80's)   
   Just because the Jumpers were one way in your OLD PC, does not mean they will   
   work with a different controller (Some systems tolerated a Slave with no   
   master. Which is not valid)   
      
   BTW a really old IDE drive use a bit more 5 and 12V power than a more recent   
   drives do. Does your external case have a external PSU? Check its spec for 5V   
   and 12V amps exceeds the required amps listed on the drive.
