   If you're using an external box then the jumper settings don't make any   
   difference so while it's there you can forget that side of things?

   Do you have another drive that you can try in the box? If so make sure   
   that it works (the external box that is). If not then try plugging the   
   old drive directly in the PC. If you do that then you will have to check   
   the jumpers. You don't need screw it in, just plug in the connecting and   
   power cables, it'll work in any position (upside don, vertical etc).
