   There is of course the possibility that the dodgy HD that the OP   
   couldn't get to work in a USB adaptor a while back has, in fact   
   physically damaged the USB ports in some way, so it's a hardware problem   
   as well. Unlikely, but not *totally* impossible.   
      
   He needs professional help.
