There must be but it may not be anything you plugged in. Today for
instance Windows told me New hardware found and couldn't install it?. So
off I went into the Control panel/system/hardware to have a look. Sure
enough one thing marked, unknown. As I had discovered just before that
my wi-fi mouse didn't work (I plugged in another one to work with) it
had to be that. Quite why it suddenly decided it was new harware (the
receiver in fact) I've no idea. I pulled out the receiver (small like a
USB key) put in back in and everything was fine.

This to say that Windows screws itself up occasionally so I suggest you
go and look at the list of hardware vie the control panel and delete
anything you see with a yellow exclamation mark then reboot to see if
the problem is solved. While you're there you might like to click on
the menu and get it to show hidden stuff (things that have been
installed/plugged in but are no longer there), in case it is one of
   them,
such as your USB boxes that you've been having trouble with.
