   First off...System Restore is not affected by a defragmentation   
   so you can use it.   
      
   However, when Outlook Express performs the compacting operation...   
   the old data is simply moved to the recycle bin...   
   so you might want to first try restoring the files   
      
   You are right but these are only bak files and they just cannot be restored
