   Can you list the make and model numbers of the drives concerned?   
   Some very old IDE (PATA) drives may not work in some USB housings.   
   This seems to be a limitation of the electronics/firmware within   
   the USB housings themselves.   
   I have experienced this situation and the only workaround was to   
   place the drives on internal IDE (PATA) connectors in another PC to   
   copy the data from them onto a more modern drive.
