   Apart from the other suggestions, it's possible that old drives need   
   more current to spin up properly than the holder can supply, especially   
   if it doesn't have a power supply other than the USB ports(s). This can   
   give symptoms such as you describe. In particular, the one that is   
   recognised but will not install is recognising the IDE controller on the   
   HD, but the controller isn't getting the information it needs from the   
   platters.
