   You may have to go to Control Panel, "Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall IE8.    
   Once you get Internet   
   Explorer working, download and run the stand-alone updater.

   This is a digitally-signed Microsoft program and running it is the only way I   
   know    
   to get Windows Update working on a new XP installation.
