   There's a good chance that a brand new laptop that's been made with   
   Windows 8 in mind will not have XP drivers available, which means that   
   XP might not install, or might not be able to fully address all   
   hardware features. Do your homework.   
      
   If it were me, I'd run a thorough disk integrity checking utility, and   
   if the disk were failing, as it sounds, I'd replace it.   
      
   You better do something quick, though - your symptoms imply a hard disk   
   that's ready to go catastrophically. Once they start to fail, it   
   happens quick.   
      
   Windows 8 is not all that different than Windows 7, except for the   
   Metro interface, which you can easily avoid.
