   Hi Stef. I will run a file check. The only updates that are enabled occur   
   after the desktop (pictures and icons) appears.   
      
   In my original post, I mentioned that the hard drive was not 'spinning', so   
   no checking going on. Once, about a year or more ago, I must have corrupted   
   some files as I got an error message on startup suggessting that I run a   
   file check which I eventually did. Errors corrected; message gone.
