   Deleting unused programs

In windows, MS sends upgrades which are saved in the remove/modify
programs section of the 'control panel' area. My interpretation is when
an upgrade/security fix, etc. is downloaded, it is then executed,
modifying the program on the local computer, and the downloaded program
is no longer needed. The problem is when I go to delete these from the
remove/modify listing, I get a message saying that the program "may not
work correctly". Are these downloaded programs still required? If so, why?
