People tend to overlook the important fact that the famous ideas that
have come from dreams have come to people who are already immersed in
those fields in their waking lives. Songwriters come up with songs in
dreams, artists come up with artworks in dreams, writers come up with
plot lines in dreams, scientists come up with scientific insights in
dreams, and so on. We do not hear of ordinary schmoes coming up with
brilliant ideas in dreams pertaining to fields in which they have no
background, except occasional claims to have heard, for example, great
music in dreams that, unfortunately, can't be recalled upon awakening.
Even that is somewhat suspect; although it has happened to me, I have
also had many dreams featuring "creative" works that were atrociously
bad, even though in some cases they seemed terrific during the dream
(kind of like how some stupid remark might seem incredibly funny when
you're high). Furthermore, typically only a small percentage of even a
creative genius's inspirations come from the dream state. So
ultimately, the talent is inherent in the creative individual, not in the
   dream state itself.
