   So you can see how people might be motivated to lie, even if there's no   
   apparent financial gain?   
      
   Whilst I agree that this might be a significant motivating factor in some   
   of the more public exponents, those who gain the respect and admiration of   
   bystanders with their exploits, I suspect that the more private believers   
   are motivated by the more personal reasons: fear of death or   
   meaninglessness, and so on.   
      
   And, of course, the experience itself is so convincing.
