   I suspect it's because it's easier to "cut" from one version of something to   
   another with a plausible transition (looking away and then back) than it   
   would be to generate the special effects to make it happen right before your   
   eyes :-)   
   Clocks don't wildly change what they display while you're looking at them,   
   but looking away and then taking another look will tend to make it happen   
   even without any intent on your part - which is why it's such a useful   
   reality check.   
   I think, generally, it is uncommon for something in a dream or OBE to change   
   while you're looking at it, but extremely common for just about anything to   
   change if you look away briefly :-)
