There was a fellow who broke into Area 51 years back in order to
research a book on certain wagon trails. He pretty much proved that the
extreme security measures that have been reported just don't exist, although
he was an experienced hiker and claimed there were armed guards and that the
biggest problem was running out of water (he had actually ran out at one
point due to a river that was supposed to have been there but has since
   dried up).
Anyways he said he saw nothing that would lend credence to Alien studies
at area 51 except for one small story about a glow in a small building with
no real idea of what he saw. As he said, it could've just been that a night
   lite was plugged in there.
Area 51 itself is an airforce R&D facility, so it's no wonder that
people who have tried to spy on it have seen strange aircraft around the
base. It's also no wonder that the government has tried to protect that area
from spying (by doing things like buying up the land the people were
watching on), since there's really no way to tell if someone who's watching
is just a UFO fan or someone trying to gather US military information for a
   forgien government.
So far though there has been nothing coming out of Area 51 except
strange aircrafts, which is hardly an indication of alien studies being
conducted there considering what Area 51 is. Look at, say, a stealth bomber.
Looks an aweful lot like an alien spacecraft if you've never seen one
before, and it was built by human means.
