Actually, that's quite a reasonable way to talk about the energy involved
   in an idea.

I would be happier to say that it probably takes energy of some kind for a
   spirit to perform cognition.

That's a leap I'm not willing to take - after all, your cognition is based
on microvolt changes in electrical potential within your neurons; but you
are not sensitive to microvolt potentials in your environment.

Well, to be more precise, sensors capture energy, recorders use signals
based on the form of that energy to modify a recording medium so that an
approximation of the signals can be retrieved later.

   > What if (and again, there's that "IF"...) spiritual / soul energy is

   Why would it be?
In this case, the sensors are designed to detect changes in atmospheric
pressure at audio frequencies, and while they _are_ sometimes also
sensitive to e-m, great care is usually taken to filter these unwanted
   signals out.

You would also have to assume that the tape recorder would have equipment
capable or generating changes in "spiritual energy", and there is no
reason to suppose that is the case.

Never having done so, I couldn't possibly comment. ;-)
