   a) How often are you awake at the time when you heard it?   
   b) If it's near the house, it's possible (but unlikely) that your waking   
   noises scare it.   
      
   But really, I'm only proposing it as a possibility - I have no idea how   
   likely it is (except that I think it's more likely than your explanation ;-).
