The TM theory takes a slightly different tack: when one meditates, one
gains rest. This rest allows repair/normalization mechanisms to become
more active. This repair-activity is reflected in the mind as some kind
of mental activity related in some way to the original stress that
caused the original damage to the nervous system. The the deeper the
level of rest gained during meditation, the more profound the stresses
that are repaired and hence, the mental activity is potentially more
   intense.
