You know... This is just my little hypothesis, but after what I experienced
last night with my attempt at an OBE (just allowing it to happen rather
than trying to make it happen) I bet these people with brain damage --
these people who some would say, "He's alive, but he doesn't know he's in
the world," are probably having OBEs pretty much constantly. From what
I've learned through meditative experience and attempts at OBEs, it seems
like when you try to force something to happen, you're giving more energy
and attention to the physical body, but when you relax and allow something
to happen in the way it's normally meant to happen, you're basically
forgetting about the physical body and thereby becoming more aware of the
energy body. That may be why some of these "invalids" just sit in a lump
on the couch, drooling, wetting their pants, and whatnot. They are
probably having an OBE and don't even know anything is going on with their
physical body because the brain damage and trauma the body has suffered has
affected the connection between the body and the spirit--probably to the
point that if the body becomes nonfunctional, it's no great loss to the
spirit. The body can't be used for much life experience, anyway. And the
cognitive stability of the physical body is such that they are not "held
back" by the very mental controls that hold fully functional people back
from having the OBEs they want.

   Just my little hypothesis.
