Harvard University started as a divinity school.

They still have a divinity school, btw. And a law school, a
   business school, medical school....

Some of the greatest work in astronomy was carried out by the
Catholic church. Mendel cracked the secrets to inheritance
and he was a Catholic clergyman...

Think of the basic tools of scholarship. If someone masters
those they have everything they need to tackle most any
questions in science and philosophy. It doesn't matter if
they honed those skills in religious studies.

Conversely, if someone is a jackass that merely absorbs
what the authority tells them and then regurgitates it back
on command, they are the proverbial one-legged-man in an
   ass kicking contest.

Usenet is a collection of one-legged-men believing they're
going to kick ass, and always has been. Even back in the
days when real people posted here.

I could copy & paste the contents of the nearest telephone
book and the alters would fall over itself in disagreement.
