   That is not what the GISS data indicates.  You can claim that the   
   dataset is wrong, and that's fine, but if not, download the Global CSV,   
   and use Excel, Libre/Open Office, R (my favorite, which is free!), or   
   some online program and plot the annual as a time series.  You can test   
   the regression coefficient; the confidence interval does not include zero.   
      
   The fact that some years after 1940 were cooler misses the point   
   entirely; it appears that 1940 was 3 SD above the 1880 to 1940 mean, and   
   so, that's where I would put things as having "started out".
