   Hmm, maybe ego is not the right word. What about egoism coupled with   
   short-sightedness? A long-sighted egoist should rationally do good things,   
   since he realises that it will benefit him in the end. The one who does   
   not look ahead, and craves instant gratification, that one can be really   
   destructive.
