From: oldernow@dev.null              Another reason a newsgroup like talk.politics.misc leaves       me more frustrated than fulfilled is there's too much "text       messaging" mostly inconveniencing others being passed off       as discussion.              For example, I looked a post in that newsgroup just a       little while ago. It was 107 lines of deeply indented       exchange, complete with the order of participation (to       possibly make sense of the indenting, even though that's       pretty much hopeless because people do inline quoting       indentation differently...), followed by one line of       response:              > It was on the news live.              Seriously? You can't trim that 107 lines of textural       nightmare down to a quote serving as the context for       your one line of response so that a multitude of others       don't have to waste their time scrolling and struggling       to extract context from a mess?              It's just more of the same when it comes to the kind of       average character of participant: "I'm going to take the       easy way out regardless how it inconveniences a multitude       of others!"              There's no way there can be a society worth living in       if *that's* the attitude of the majority. The cost (many       other being inconvenienced) vastly outweighs the benefit       (one lazy ass farting a single sentence beneath an ocean       of fecal stench).              Yes... I know... "Grow up, oldernow! It's USENET!" "You       don't *have* to read it!" Blah. Blah.              Yep. But I also don't have to sit idly by pretending some       "system" could save beings like that - especially when it       seems they constitute the majority! - from inconveniencing       said "system" into a state of uselessness.              Debating meta concepts like "Democrat", "Republican",       "liberal", "conservative" is an utter waste of time for       beings that just plain don't know how - or refuse - to       act in ways that promote/bolster society.              It's that simple.              --       oldernow       xyz001 at nym.hush.com              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
