Not out of the realm of probability.
Out of over 160 who entered boot camp, less than 70 of that original
number graduated on time.
Over 30 of the original entrants were dropped back or mustered out due
to bone spurs and shin splints within the first month. Another 30 odd
were dropped for lying about their criminal histories, or previously
undetected illnesses such as cancer, mental health, STDs, vision, age,
marital status etc..
One guy stupidly shot himself on purpose in the shower at the rifle
range on the last day of qualifying because he fired Marksman and would
get a toilet seat badge.
The rest were transferred to other platoons or placed on medical hold
due to injuries from training, disciplinary actions, illness, attempt to
escape, pissing their pants while standing in formation, refusing to
wash their clothing, or repeated blanket parties for causing other team
members to be punished. DI's don't hear screaming due to socks with
bars of soap, or scrub brushes and Whisk coming from showers - until it
stops, then they check. Think about that.
Two weeks into third phase, the platoon was marching to noon chow and
some outraged recruits threw one of their members over a third floor
stairwell to the concrete deck below.
The DI SSgt halted the platoon, ran over to check the obviously
seriously injured recruit, then ran into the building and called the
emegency corpsmen.
With nothing else that could be done and every minute counting, he came
back, commanded forward march, turned his head to the platoon and said,
"That was FUCKING TIGHT!" "DOUBLE TIME! HUT!"
