There are some medications that are deemed too expensive or too questionable
in terms of their success at treating problems for the State to administer
   to inmates.

In AZ, inmates may not purchase their own medications that fall under this
category - but that does not mean other States do not allow it. I would
recommend you contact the facility where your friend is housed and ask to
speak to one of the facility administrators.

You should be able to get a straight answer from them - even if they won't
discuss an inmate's medical particulars, they will give you a
straightforward 'yes' or 'no' to the question:
Is it possible for an inmate to purchase medication not on the approved
State prescription list if the Doctor there at her facility prescribes it?"

My guess is she's taking you on a ride, but another poster here, Nadacomin,
may be able to give you some answers specific to MI.

Good luck. And keep your hand on your wallet.
