   The only time it would be "irrational" to not feel fear when confronted with   
   an individual who has demonstrated his willingness to victimize others is if   
   you happen to be that person who looks like he just might be big enough and   
   bad enough to slap the cat-piss out of the convict.   
      
   Convicts might be dumb-asses, but they ain't stupid.  They aren't going to   
   tangle with anyone who might give them a run for their money, or who they   
   can't get the drop on or sucker punch first.  They tend to be experts at   
   watching out for their own hides!  And sometimes that means just keep on   
   walking and look for somebody else to be your mark.
