From: Barking@The.Moon              Did'nt answer the question -              > Wisconsin has a law known as the FEA, this law makes it unlawful to       > discriminate against ex-cons based solely upon a felony conviction.              Under the Wisconsin FEA, employers MAY discriminate lawfully, if the       position bears substantially in connection with the nature of the particular       crime. Bank robbers cannot expect to get jobs working in a bank, for       example. This would be an example of lawful discrimination.              The repeal of AB 353 would make discrimination agsint felons lawful "whether       or not" the particular crime has any bearing on the job in question. This       would make all discrimination against offenders lawful. There is really no       reason why they might stop discriminating against "convicted former       inmates". They might also begin discriminating against anyone with a       speeding ticket, someone who had a ticket for littering, and potentially       worse. Perhaps one day free speech would come under attack, through       employment discrimination. Who knows how far they would push it.              It is pretty much a mute point anyway - because discrimination against       felons is almost universal in Wisconsin, despite the law. But those who       discriminate are aware that they are "exposed" to potential litigation, and       therefore they are trying to close that gap.              They are being fools - because nobody has sued them. They are also being       fools because there is a tremendous amount of untapped talent out there       which is being discarded as rubbish. This is an micro¯o economic       blunder.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
