I can't say I really disagree with your points, Soup. Especially the part
about shorter sentences of much greater exertion.

I don't think prison cells should be occupied by anyone who is not:
   a) A danger to society
   or
   b) A repeat offender

In my ideal system, all convicted felons who met one or both of the criteria
above would be required to partake in extreme hard labor until they are
within two years of release. And I'm talking no "medical" exceptions or
anything. People incapable of swinging a 16 pound sledge would be required
to sit around polishing staff boots or whatever. But the work day would be
12 hours in my prison - 6 days per week.

Once a convict got within two years of release, he could choose to learn any
of a bunch of trade positions we would offer. Anything from carpentry,
plumbing, auto mechanics, machinist, heavy equipment operator...whatever.
And if he screwed up in a bad way - like running his cock pocket to staff or
fighting - he loses the education privilege and goes back to the gang for 6
   months.
