Rehabilitation efforts including psychological therapy, drug therapy,
counseling, trade skills and even education will all amount to little more
than a practical joke if there is no opportunity to find work when you get
out.
In fact, I would argue that the process of someone becoming a criminal, then
reforming in prison, then getting out and ultimately returning to crime may
be worse than not reforming at all. I say this because if someone has truly
reformed, when they revert back to crime they will once again have the
element of surprise against their target and they might also modify their
technique or strategy, etc. This makes profiling pretty much useless, etc.
Prison is a learning process. You either learn to live right, or you learn
how to live wrong really effectively. If the business community closes it's
doors to hiring felons, then you dont really have a choice to live right or
not. Seems like prison, as bad as it is, has made legitimate attempts to do
it's part, and many inmates have done their part to rehab in earnest, but
business is not interested in refurbished humans and they are much more
interested in blacklisting people.
