   The illogical extreme is not always the most practical answer.   
   I'd like to see some data on high-speed chases; numbers of deaths- both   
   perpetrators, police officers and innocent bystanders; numbers of chases   
   that end in capture, and for what charge prior to the one for eluding   
   (traffic infractions, murder- you know).

   They're actually pretty responsive when you set their feet afire    
   After the Mena case, they cut SWAT usage by some 80%. Maybe that reform idea   
   will attach to the high-speed chase concept.

   Nobody proposes that, that I know of.   
   If a cop witnesses a crime, or is looking for a specific vehicle, or even   
   looking for a specific *type* of vehicle (say, after a robbery), and the   
   driver rabbits, there is justification for a chase. Traffic violations just   
   don't cut it- the price is too high.
