   Of course it is. But all it takes is one really bad judgement call and some   
   bad luck to get in, and that can happen to nearly anybody.

   True enough. But there are responsible people locked up as well, who just   
   lost control of their lives for a short period of time.

   That's a very short-sighted view. Remember that most prisoners will be   
   coming into society again sooner or later. Do you want the convict who   
   moves in next door able to integrate himself into society or do you want him   
   so ruined by the time he has done that he has no choice but to reject   
   society and turn to crime?
