A 3 year old child generally lacks the control and mass required to deliver
a fatal stabwound, so I'll go with 5 years old. Children not much older
have been SERIAL KILLERS, so assuming there's always a "first victim", I'd
not understimate the intent of a child once said child was physically
   capable of killing.

It would depend on a variety of factors, observed intent, size and
   intimidation value of
the assailant, weapon carried, weapons I had..

Saving or taking a life is not something that is "black or white", there are
many factors involved. That's just preparation. The act itself, being
there, you can bet I'd pull the trigger, knife wielding child, or crazed
granny, my life is not being lost because someone I don't even know can be
spared the grief of having to explain their loved one's actions.
