   Yes, it is entirely inaccurate to compare the restraint of patients in a   
   secure and restricted mental ward with armed police instructing suspected   
   deviants to disarm themselves in an open street.

   No it doesn't.  Read above.  Mental patients are "unarmed" by default, and   
   must undergo extraordinary measures to arm themselves in even the most basic   
   way, oh, and wrong again, as orderlies do sometimes kill patients, both   
   accidentally and on purpose.   
      
   Guns are a technology, and "zip guns" can even be constructed by most   
   people.  As such, disarming our police won't make guns in the hands of the   
   criminals go away.  If anything, it'll make the police "go away", often as a   
   result of a gun-related conflict.  When a police officer can't respond in   
   kind to the criminal, his job is an impossible one.   
      
   And, you'll admit an unarmed cop isn't very smart to wade into a gangland   
   gunfight to slap cuffs on armed thugs, if they feel cordial enough to obey   
   the instructions to lower their guns.
